Symbolical and Informational Component of the Organizational Culture in Displaced Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine (On the example of Mariupol HEI)

Title: Symbolical and Informational Component of the Organizational Culture in Displaced Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine (On the example of Mariupol HEI)
Authors: Turenko, Oleg; Surovtseva, Iryna; Nykolaieva, Valentyna
Abstract: This paper analyzes organizations (corporate groups) that have withdrawn assets and
personnel to the territory controlled by Ukraine consistently based on the relevant Ministry
(Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine) decision. In the first years of displacement,
the "routine" issues associated with launching the educational process became relevant, as
distinguished from the "high third mission" consisting in creating innovative infrastructure
facilities, forming the entrepreneurial culture of employees and students, and suchlike.
Organizations (rectorates) that followed integrated (overarching) strategies had a consistent
(agreed) internal and external image, or they have elaborated a uniform organizational culture
and succeeded in assisting their employees in the search for narratives. "Workplace" has
become almost the only factor enabling reinforcing the professional and individual self-worth
for displaced employees.

Quality Assurance Practices as Determinants of Academic Staff Effectiveness in South-West Nigerian Polytechnics

Title: Quality Assurance Practices as Determinants of Academic Staff Effectiveness in South-West Nigerian Polytechnics
Authors: Ibrahim, Abdulrahman Olanrewaju; Titilayo, Alabi Afusat; Suleiman, Yusuf; Ishola, Mustapha Adam
Abstract: Quality assurance practices are input, process and output systems that are put in place by
school administrators in order to ensure academic standards. It is on this premise that this
study examined quality assurance practices as determinants of academic staff effectiveness.
The study population consists of 6,577 academic staff in South-west Nigerian Polytechnics.
Stratified and random sampling techniques were used to select 327 academic staff. An
adapted instrument titled “Quality Assurance Practices Questionnaire’’ (QAPQ) and
“Academic Staff Effectiveness Questionnaire’’ (ASEQ) were used to collect relevant data.
Data collected were analysed using percentage and correlation methods. Findings indicate
several quality assurance practices, which include quality assurance in recruitment of
lecturers, staff supervision, capacity building, and library services. Also, the study revealed
a significant relationship between quality assurance practices and academic staff
effectiveness. Specifically, it was found that ensuring quality assurance in recruitment of
lecturers is a determinant of academic staff effectiveness. Similarly, quality assurance in
library services is a key determinant of academic staff effectiveness. Based on the findings
of the study, it can be said that quality assurance practices had great influence on academic
staff effectiveness as revealed in the study and that the predominantly used quality assurance
practice among Polytechnics management in South-west Nigerian Polytechnics was library
services. The study recommends that management of polytechnics should sustain the optimal
utilization of quality assurance practices, to boost institutional effectiveness.

Oil Pipelines: Eurasian geopolitical reconfiguration

Title: Oil Pipelines: Eurasian geopolitical reconfiguration
Authors: Labardini, Rodrigo
Abstract: The Caspian Sea is an important source of oil for the world, particularly Europe. However,
the landlocked area was surrounded by neighbors who were commercial rivals and possessed
major regional access routes. Examination of Eurasian oil pipelines evidences two large
regions: Northern European and Mediterranean European systems involved in competition
and collaboration in close quarters with competition and confrontation to reach the European
markets from the Caspian Sea sources. With the demise of the Soviet Union, and driven by
EU and US interests, as well as counting on their support, the Caspian region broke the
Russian oil monopoly in less than a decade.

The conjunction commutativity law does not hold in natural language: Difficulties in the search for syntactic support

Title: The conjunction commutativity law does not hold in natural language: Difficulties in the search for syntactic support
Authors: López-Astorga, Miguel
Abstract: Orenes and Johnson-Laird gave arguments to show that the conjunction commutativity law,
that is, the principle providing that the order of the conjuncts has no influence on a
coordinating conjunction such as ‘and’, is not respected by natural language. Their point was
that both semantics and pragmatics are more important than syntax, and that, for that reason,
semantic and pragmatic factors can change the sense of a sentence with ‘and’ if the order of
its conjuncts is reversed. This paper keeps following this direction and tries to argue that it is
really hard to find syntactic characteristics in sentences that can explain changes such as those
ones.
