Marxism And Its ‘Other’: Why Do We Need Althusser To Understand Foucault?

Title: Marxism And Its ‘Other’: Why Do We Need Althusser To Understand Foucault?
Authors: Rodin, Lika
Abstract: With the current renewal of interest in the Marxist theoretical tradition, revisiting its classical
and neoclassical texts is crucial for understanding Marxism’s explanatory potential in the
context of contemporary socio-political relationships. This paper makes productive efforts to
review existing theoretical perspectives on non-coercive mechanisms of engaging the masses
with particular value systems. I discuss Althusser’s theory of ideology: its content, central
critique, and developments in relation to other compatible theories, the most salient of which
is the idea of governmentality proposed by Foucault. Foucault’s approach is especially
interesting due to its consistent attempts to separate itself from the critical tradition. As I
demonstrate, however, several parallels can be drawn between the theory of ideology and the
notion of governmentality, including the focus on reproduction, attempts to address the issue
of contingency, interest in both the symbolic and the material, the emphasis on the
mechanism of subjection and recognition of individualization of power relationships. I
conclude that critical reflections over Althusser’s epistemological findings and the legacy of
his ideas may facilitate our understanding of prospective developments in the Marxist
tradition and its alternatives.

Alchemy in Russian Literature

Title: Alchemy in Russian Literature
Authors: Isakhanli, Hamlet
Abstract: Along with sciences, alchemical activity heavily influenced literature and art, and the images
of alchemists were widely reflected in the works of poets, writers, artists, philosophers and
scientists. In Eastern and Western literature of ancient, medieval, and modern times, alchemy,
together with the intriguing images of alchemists, was used also as a source of vivid
metaphors.
This article is devoted to the subject of alchemy in Russian literature, investigating which
writers were interested in it and how it was developed in Russia. Prominent Russian authors’
poetic and prosaic writings have been perused throughout the research paper and it is believed
that the images of alchemists portrayed by Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Alexander
Herzen, Nikolai Ogarev, Alexei Tolstoy, and Mikhail Bulgakov were of European origin.

Communication Through Creative Drama in Architectural Education: Example of Basic Design Course

Title: Communication Through Creative Drama in Architectural Education: Example of Basic Design Course
Authors: Kılıçaslan, Hare
Abstract: Man lives in a physical and social environment. It is necessary to be open to all
communication in the classroom environment for ensuring an effective learning process.
Since the number of students has been increased in recent years, it was inevitable to use
different methods in education. It is inevitable to enable the interaction between teacher and
teacher, teacher, and learner as well as the interaction between learner and learner. In
addition, it is necessary to establish learning environments based on the exchange of
information and ideas alongside the intellectual and experiential activities based on
communication. Since the creative drama focuses on the student, it is a method that will
encourage the students to actively participate by sharing the knowledge, skills, and
perspectives of the students in the classroom. The study was conducted with 24 students who
took the Basic Design course in Architecture Department of Faculty of Architecture of
Karadeniz Technical University during the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. It
was aimed to determine the effects of the creative drama method in the establishment of
communication by giving 7 hours of Basic Design course in the creative method. Following
the results of the research, it has been concluded that the creative drama method is effective
for enriching the communication and interaction between the students.

The Higher Education of Ukraine in the Global Educational Space

Title: The Higher Education of Ukraine in the Global Educational Space
Authors: Soroka, Svitlana; Akimova, Tetiana
Abstract: The article presents the analysis of the Ukrainian state policy in the field of higher education
in terms of its integration into the global educational space. The process of management and
financing of Ukrainian higher education institutions, the quality and quantity of teaching
staff, the ratio of the number of teaching staff, and students are considered. The authors
determine the reasons for the slow integration of Ukrainian higher education into the global
educational space, low ratings of Ukrainian higher education institutions in the world ranking
of universities. The main problems of Ukrainian higher education institutions are inadequate
financing from the state budget, restriction of their autonomous right to set the rules, the
decrease in the number of students, and the growing quantity of lecturers which exceeds the
number of students in higher education institutions. The authors made recommendations for
improving the quality and competitiveness of Ukrainian higher education in the world.
Among them, in particular, are developing criteria for forming a rating of higher education
institutions in Ukraine that will coincide with the world and European requirements,
increasing academic exchanges with the world’s leading universities, forming an effective
model of state policy for the development of higher education in Ukraine focused on
improving the institutional and organizational structure.
