The Significance of Love and Selflessness in Iris Murdoch’s Moral Philosophy

Title: The Significance of Love and Selflessness in Iris Murdoch’s Moral Philosophy
Authors: Sadjadi, Bakhtiar; Baharvand, Peyman Amanolahi
Abstract: As a distinguished philosopher and novelist in the second half of the twentieth century, Iris
Murdoch addressed the significance of ethics in her framework of thought. . Murdoch’s moral
philosophy was widely acknowledged as a challenge to the prevailing ethical traditions
which, she asserted, had failed to present an accurate picture of morality. As a philosopher
and literary figure, Murdoch maintained that not only moral philosophy but also literature
should depict perceptible pictures of man’s morality. The purpose of this paper is to closely
explore Murdoch’s perspective towards the weight of love in moral philosophy. Since she
was concerned with ethical issues and man’s confrontation with ethical questions in a world
in which religious values and beliefs had been shattered, Murdoch deployed literature to
convey the concepts she advocated in her moral philosophy. She contended that literature
was capable of sustaining and improving man’s morality. Murdoch was a prolific novelist
and playwright authoring 26 novels and 6 plays in which she developed and reflected her
philosophical arguments through the portrayal of her intended ethical behavior. This
tendency is mostly highlighted in The Flight from the Enchanter (1956), and The Severed
Head (1961) in which Murdoch resorts to Plato’s theory of Forms and his idea of the Good
to combat the conventional moral philosophy of the twentieth century. Based on the findings
of this article, Murdoch intends to depict the significance of freedom and love as the
prerequisites of morality in any philosophical system.

Reconnaissance of ‘Difference’ in Cognitive Maps: Authenticating Happily Ever After in Julia Quinn’s To Sir Philip with Love

Title: Reconnaissance of ‘Difference’ in Cognitive Maps: Authenticating Happily Ever After in Julia Quinn’s To Sir Philip with Love
Authors: Farooqui, Javaria; Ashraf, Rabia
Abstract: This study explores differences in individual cognitive mapping of the protagonists in Julia
Quinn’s novel, To Sir Philip with Love. A qualitative analysis of the maps, cartographed on
physiological and psychological planes, finds them to be diverse in nature. A “difference” is
developed, step by step, in the mental cognitive mapping of the female protagonist of Eloise
and in the physical cognitive maps of the character the male protagonist, Philip. Nonetheless,
the thesis lies in the inherent creativity caused by the collision of two varied cognitions.
Analysis of these cognitions involves the creation of these characters according to the basic
cognitive structure of the romance readers as well. After an investigation of the
‘mindscaping’ model, developed primarily around the main characters in To Sir Philip with
Love, it is concluded that the positivity in the conflicting maps is established because of the
genre of the novel, in which there is a need to channel the individual cognition towards the
creation of a larger cognitive map for the readers, with authentication of Happily Ever After
as its goal. Furthermore, this paper also locates the status of these findings within the romance
narrative; authentication of HEA, works as a major building force in molding and
constructing the authorial, fictional and reader cognition.

Functionalism in Translation: A Case Study Investigation into Translation literature based on Nord's Documentary vs. Instrumental Dichotomy

Title: Functionalism in Translation: A Case Study Investigation into Translation literature based on Nord's Documentary vs. Instrumental Dichotomy
Authors: Arbabi, Maryam; Farahani, Mehrdad Vasheghani
Abstract: The main objective of the current study was to analyze a Persian Translation of a short story
from functionalism perspective and Documentary vs. Instrumental Dichotomy. To this end,
the Persian translation of the book titled “The Little Prince” was analyzed and compared with
its English version (indirect translation from French) to see if the Persian translation was
more documentary or instrumental oriented in nature. The theoretical framework of the study
was Nord’s dichotomy of instrumental vs. documentary translation. The book was analyzed
at the sentence and above sentence level and covered the whole book. As the qualitative
analysis showed, the translation of the book was instrumental oriented, and the book reads
like an original in the target language.

The Effectiveness of the Communication Training Program for Combating Violence Against Women

Title: The Effectiveness of the Communication Training Program for Combating Violence Against Women
Authors: Şentürk, Şener; Tuncel, Meriç Kanbur
Abstract: Domestic violence (also named as domestic abuse, battering, or family violence) is a pattern
of behaviour which involves violence or other abuse by one person against another in a
domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. Domestic violence against women can
be categorized as physical, sexual, psychological or economical violence. It can be seen that
women exposed to such types of violence develop physical or psychological problems, even
in some cases the violence ends up with domestic homicide or suicide. It is thought that an
educational program which will enable these women to reconstruct their self-esteem and look
to the future with hope with healing and developing skills should be prepared. Therefore,
Elimination of Violence Communication Training Program was prepared and it is aimed to
find the effectiveness, positive/negative conditions occurring during the application of the
program or the shortcomings of the program.
In this experimental research, pre and post-test control group design was used. The duration
of the application of the study was 16 sessions (48 hours). Quantitative data were gathered
through "Family Evaluation Scale", which highlights the dimensions of domestic violence
against women within the family; "Violence within the Family Scale", which highlights the
violence experiences; "Communication Skills Evaluation Scale", which highlights the
communication skills; "Life Satisfaction Scale", which scales the life experiences of the
participants. In addition, the quantitative data were supported with observation forms,
interview records and forms including participant opinions. The participants of the
experimental group showed no meaningful relationship between their pre and post test results
in terms of communication skills, whereas the sub-categories of violence within the familyverbal violence, emotional response of family functionality, and behaviour control- showed
meaningful relationship in favour of post-test and it was found that the mean of pre and post
test results of the experimental group showed an increase in favour of post-test in terms of
all dimensions of the scale.
