| dc.description.abstract | This article examines the pedagogical significance of storytelling in the development of listening and speaking skills among university-level students learning English. The study aims to explore the impact of storytelling on students’ listening and oral communication abilities, present practical lesson models, and offer pedagogical recommendations. The research was conducted within a 12-week module designed for university students with intermediate to upper-intermediate (B1–B2) English proficiency. Story-based lessons were structured in three stages: pre-listening preparation (topic introduction, visual support, and vocabulary pre-teaching), while-listening activities (identifying main ideas, making predictions, and completing details), and post-listening tasks (retelling the story, role-playing, and creating alternative endings). The results were analyzed using a qualitative and interpretive approach. Observations indicated a significant increase in student engagement throughout the lessons. Storytelling activities enhanced students’ initiative and made their oral expression more fluent and coherent. In particular, pair and group retelling tasks, as well as dramatization activities, helped students construct longer and more connected sentences and improve their speech rhythm and intonation. Listening skills also improved considerably. The logical structure and sequence of stories helped students better understand main ideas and cause–effect relationships. Students also began to apply listening strategies such as identifying key words, predicting upcoming events, and visualizing scenes. Emotional and motivational aspects played an important role as well. Students described storytelling lessons as “interesting,” “stress-reducing,” and “motivating.” Story-based activities also supported a collaborative and interactive learning environment. Even previously shy students were able to participate actively and demonstrate their speaking skills through different roles. The study concludes that traditional oral storytelling is an effective, low-cost, and easily applicable pedagogical tool for developing listening and speaking skills in a university context. It supports not only linguistic development but also communicative and social competencies. Pedagogical recommendations include structuring storytelling sessions, selecting appropriate stories, organizing collaborative tasks, prioritizing fluency and coherence, encouraging reflective activities, and gradually increasing task complexity. This approach also provides teachers with a practical and adaptable framework that facilitates the integrated development of listening and speaking skills. | en_US |
