Authors: Lopez-Astorga, Miguel
Abstract: This paper is about a problem with the dissemination of scientific information. As it is well known, most of science is written in English nowadays. However, large portions of population in the planet do not understand that language, and, accordingly, it is hard for many people to access to relevant scientific results at present. Given this situation, there are two alternatives. On the one hand, we can try to make people improve their English levels. On the other hand, we can foster linguistic inter-understanding techniques amongst general population around the world. I basically explore here this last possibility, and I do that based on a case study that seems to confirm previous ideas about inter-understanding.2018-01-01T00:00:00ZBaudrillardian Concepts of Hyperreality and Simulacra in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and CrakePourgharib, BehzadPourebrahim, Afsanehhttp://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12323/39752019-01-25T08:14:27Z2018-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Baudrillardian Concepts of Hyperreality and Simulacra in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake
Authors: Pourgharib, Behzad; Pourebrahim, Afsaneh
Abstract: The study attempts to analyze Margaret Atwood Oryx and Crake in the light of Baudrillard Theory. The discussion is based on Baudrillard theory of Hyperreality and Simulacra. Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake (2003) takes place in a future time where there are scientific progresses. The protagonist of the story is Snowman who used to be called Jimmy and who is the son of two genetic scientists. Snowman lives near some creatures that are called Crakers. When jimmy is near starvation, he decides to search for food in the ruins of RejoovenEsence. Jimmy and Oryx develop a relationship. The human race is wiped out and Jimmy realizes that all of these are planned by Crake. Crake says that the three of them are immune to the virus. Crake kills Oryx and he is killed by Jimmy. Jimmy also gets a disease and finally finds three humans, two men and a woman, and he does not know whether to kill them or become friend with them. He makes up his mind and goes towards them and the story ends there. It can be said that there is elimination of hyperreality in the novel as there is the decline of civilization. Baudrillard’s hyperreality explained the situation in the consumer society in which the real was lost. Thus, it can be said that the catastrophe in the novel has resulted in the elimination of the civilization, consumer society and thus hyperreality in the consumer society. But it should be pointed out that there is also hyperreality created due to the catastrophe because things are no longer what they used to be and some human made structures have lost their function, similar to the map in the Borges fable pointed out by Baudrillard.2018-01-01T00:00:00ZPre-Service Mathematics Teachers’ Conceptual Knowledge of Binary OperationAksu, ZekiKul, Ümithttp://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12323/39742019-01-25T08:12:37Z2018-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers’ Conceptual Knowledge of Binary Operation
Authors: Aksu, Zeki; Kul, Ümit
Abstract: Binary operation is one of the main topics of undergraduate mathematics. A binary operation is also used as a foundation for other disciplines such as physics, chemistry and biology. This study aims to describe the conceptual knowledge level of pre-service mathematics teachers regarding binary operation. In order to achieve this, a test consisting of open-ended and true-false questions on binary operation was administered to a total of 77 pre-service teachers; 32 primary school pre-service mathematics teachers, 30 high school pre-service mathematics teachers and 15 pedagogical formation teacher candidates. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive analysis in the context of the framework developed by the researchers. The findings of the study indicated that the performance of the pre-service teachers was insufficient with regards to the underlying conceptual knowledge that the questions sought. The study also indicates that pre-service teachers have difficulty in forming their subject knowledge successfully and they need to re-structure this as soon as possible.2018-01-01T00:00:00ZThe Irish Education System and Implications for the Turkish Education SystemKarabulut, Nuriyehttp://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12323/39732019-01-25T08:10:33Z2018-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: The Irish Education System and Implications for the Turkish Education System
Authors: Karabulut, Nuriye
Abstract: The purpose of the current study is to make a detailed introduction to the Irish education system and to come up with some implications latter through comparing it with the Turkish education system. Accordingly, the literature was reviewed. A general introduction was made to Ireland and its education system was examined considering its goals, structure and process dimensions. Similar and different aspects of the Irish and Turkish education system were discussed, and various suggestions were developed. The Irish and Turkish education systems have many similarities in terms of having a centralized structure, students’ obligation to take a general exam at the end of secondary education, financing of schools mostly by public resources, dominance of external inspection at schools and control of higher education by higher education councils such as YÖK and HEA. On the other hand, these two systems differ from each other in terms of administrative structure of schools, time of compulsory education, secular structure of education, rights to send children to whichever school they wish and to educate children at home, financial resources allocated for education, appointment of school principals and participation of stakeholders in administration. As a result of the comparison of these two education systems, it can be said that more opportunities should be provided for stakeholders to take part in administrative processes, psychologists should be included in inspection units, more emphasis should be put on self-assessment and more guidance and counseling should be offered to students so that the education system in Turkey can develop more.2018-01-01T00:00:00Z
